Mercedes and the Popemobile

August 19, 2010 Featured No Comments

It’s one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century. Yes…the Popemobile. In Bergen County NJ, used Mercedes drivers instantly recognize it. However, besides the unique design, not much is commonly known about the pope’s relationship with Mercedes.

The story begins in 1930. That’s when Pope Pius XI received a Mercedes-Benz Nurburg 460 as a present from Daimler-Benz AG. Since then, it’s become a legend. In Rockland County NY, ML drivers know Mercedes has provided the religious leader with a wide selection of vehicles, including extensively converted limousines to off-road vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz works in close cooperation with the pope, which is what’s expected from the top luxury automaker.

Possibly the biggest challenge came in 1982. Mercedes was asked to develop the first popemobile based off an off-road vehicle. What did Mercedes do? Well, it converted a G-Class, and with the necessary adjustments, a worthy off-road popemobile was born. Whether it’s the pope or its multitude of clients, Mercedes always goes the extra mile.

But that’s not the only story. After WWII, the automaker’s relationship with the religious leader changed. For Pope Pius XI was a believer in automotive vehicles, and he embraced Mercedes. That year, Mercedes presented him a Mercedes-Benz 300 d: the “Adenauer-Mercedes.”

The vehicle was converted into a landaulet with an extended wheelbase, a soft-top above the rear compartment, and a hard-top above the front seats. In Bergen County NJ, used Mercedes drivers would’ve agreed. The transformation was remarkable.

Luxurious vehicles are always in demand, and the pope–like any Mercedes customer–values the automaker’s dedication to luxury and customer satisfaction. Because, when you’re as busy as the pope, you need a dependable vehicle. Mercedes has been proud to be that car.
